Robert Edward Harris

Robert (Bob) Edward Harris, 80, died Friday, February 21, 2020 at home surrounded by family. Being an avid HAM radio fan, he was determined to live one more day, not to miss Thursday’s HAM radio night!

Born and raised in Clarkesville, GA, the son of William Roscoe and Bertha Jane (Senkbeil) Harris. He was the baby of five, having three sisters and one brother.

Bob joined the U.S. Army where he dedicated 20 years of service and eventually retired as Sergeant First Class. A major highlight during his service was meeting his wife, Lisa (Liesel) while stationed in Germany. They were married in 1964. After retiring from the military, he settled in Liberty Hill. He then started working for 3M in Austin and spent the next 22 years there before retiring a second time. Amazingly, he never took a sick day while in the service or at 3M.

Bob had a passion for Ham Radio, because he loved meeting and talking with people. He got his license in 1965 and his call sign was “WD5BNB”. He drove to Jarrell and helped communicate with red cross and first responders during the horrific tornado.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Elisabeth (Lisa) Harris; his daughter’s, Marita Lloyd, Chris Copeland (James Copeland), Linda Harris (Reggie Leuty), Jill Cearley (Nathan Cearley); grandchildren, Victoria Knam, Stephanie Brown (Jeffrey Brown), Nicholas Copeland, Carson Cearley, Kinley Cearley; great grandchildren Samantha Lloyd, Perry Brown; siblings Elizabeth (Liz) Simmons and Susie York; many nieces, nephew, cousins, and close friends.

A heartfelt thanks to Nurse Debbie, Martha, Lucy, and Claudia. The care you gave Bob was truly remarkable! You are all Angels!

A graveside service was held in February at Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Larry Granville ‘Papa’ Jordan

Larry Granville “Papa” Jordan, age 73, passed from this world to that of our Heavenly Father on Monday, May 18, 2020 at Scott & White Medical Center in Round Rock, TX.

Larry was born in Dallas, TX on February 25, 1947, the only child of his loving parents, Lawrence Cecil and Ina Dee Jordan.

He was a gifted and hard-working young man, playing the trumpet in the high school and ROTC band at W.H. Adamson High School in Dallas, TX. Larry’s dream was to become a test pilot in the US Navy. After high school graduation in 1965, he attended Texas A&M University in College Station, serving in the Corps of Cadets. Tragically, his dream of becoming a pilot ended when he was critically injured in an accident during the Texas A&M Homecoming bonfire event. After a long recovery, Larry was unable to continue attending Texas A&M. He took a full-time job at Frito-Lay in Dallas, TX, and enrolled in night classes to study engineering.

Over the next 15 years at Frito-Lay, Larry used his exceptional intellect, creativity, and work ethic to grow into an expert in the field of process equipment design and fabrication. He branched into additional career opportunities which led to one of his greatest accomplishments in 1992, the co-founding of Project Services Group (PSG), Inc, in Dallas, TX. With his business partners, Larry grew PSG into an organization with a nationally known reputation of exceptional customer service and project success. As proud as he was of PSG’s accomplishments, he was even more thankful for the friendships he developed with his PSG family.

Throughout his life, Larry mastered many hobbies and skills. Never one to sit by while others worked, Larry gave 110% to anything he tried. His interests were varied, and he loved sharing what he learned with his family. His injury during college made activities more difficult for him, but he pushed himself twice as hard as anyone else. He excelled at fishing, hunting, wood carving, gardening, competition shooting, model airplanes, wine making, and in his later years cooking and baking. Larry always went out of his way to help others, and touched so many lives with his generosity, kindness, and humor.

Larry was blessed with two marriages in his life. His first marriage in 1968 to Sharon Murphy (Jordan) gave him two daughters who adored their daddy, Lori and Shannon. His second marriage to his devoted wife, Dana Crew Jordan, was full of joy, laughs, and Larry’s delicious cooking. Together they built a home, a vineyard, and enjoyed their retirement. Larry’s marriage to Dana brought him the additional blessing of his conversion to Catholicism. Larry took great comfort in his faith and the guidance of the Catholic Church. In true “Larry Jordan” style, he whole heartedly took on his role as a faithful servant and pillar of his community.

One of Larry’s greatest loves was being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the Faithful Navigator of The Father Abram J. Ryan Assembly Fourth Degree, which he served for two years. The Father Abram J. Ryan Assembly is the largest and oldest assembly in Texas. He was awarded Knight of the Year in 2009.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years, Dana Crew Jordan of Liberty Hill; his daughters Lori Jordan and Shannon Jordan; his step-daughters Jennifer Crew Baker and Melissa Crew Brady; his sons-in-law Edward Brady and Michael Spencer; his grandchildren “the Little Kids” Heather, Chaney, McKenzie, Brady, Daniel, Megan, Colton, Riley, Ryan, Mason, and Lexi; his great grandchildren Cannon and Harlow; their loyal dog, Boomer.

The funeral was held on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in Florence, Texas. Burial followed the funeral at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery and Prayer Gardens in Georgetown, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association.

Marianne Merritt

Marianne Merritt of Liberty Hill, Texas, passed away Saturday, July 4th, 2020 after a valiant fight against metaplastic breast cancer.

Marianne was born Dec 29, 1962, in Monahans, TX, to Robert Neely Merritt and Marjorie Nell Reed Merritt, both Jacksonville, TX natives. Following a family move to Conroe, TX in 1971, Marianne formed lasting friendships and realized her talents in music, choir and theater arts. After high school graduation in 1981, Marianne was accepted into The University of Texas at Austin and in 1985 obtained a degree in English and secondary education. After a summer tour of Europe, she accepted her first job, teaching 7th grade English in Huntsville, TX. When asked about that job, she said teaching was a stage performance. To do her job well she had to give such an entertaining performance that her students had no choice but to listen and learn. In 1986, after some beers and bonding with her Dad, an agreement was made that if Marianne could pass the Law School Entry Exam, good old Dad would foot the bill. Four years later they both won the bet and Marianne received her law degree from the University of Houston.

Marianne began her legal career working at a law firm in Houston and quickly realized that environment was not her cup of tea. She relocated to Austin and, following in her Dad’s footsteps, accepted a position as a title examiner for First Security Title, utilizing her knowledge in real estate law to become an invaluable asset to that company. In 1996, she accepted a position as Branch Manager for First American Title. It was there that she met the love of her life whom she would later marry, Bonnie Patton. In 1999, they welcomed two precious children to complete their family, Evan Reese and Savannah Rose.

She used to say she was never a ‘real lawyer’, and once said that she would never be a great lawyer because she didn’t like to argue.  Truth be told, no one stood a chance against her arguments. Her quick wit and unique perspective educated, enlightened, and inspired all who knew her. If she was passionate about something, your only option was to sit and listen because you were about to be ‘taken to school’.

When Marianne was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 17, 2019, she faced it with bravery and her typical humor, referring to the cancer as “no more than a blip on my radar”, while going through chemo, surgery and radiation to become cancer free. When asked by friends how she was doing, she would respond with “Well, I’m above the dirt and that’s the best way to spend your day!” A year later, on May 27, 2020 when the cancer resurfaced in both lungs, she forged ahead with chemo and immunotherapy infusions, while displaying that ‘Bring It On’ optimism and determination to slay the dragon, just as she had done before. As it became clear that this mountain was just too steep to climb, she continued to fight for and cherish every moment with her family until the very end.

Marianne leaves behind, but will continue to walk beside, her spouse of 24 years, Bonnie Patton, their twins, Reese and Savannah Merritt of Liberty Hill, her sister, Glynna Merritt White and brother-in-law Bob White, of Jacksonville, TX, nephews Bryan Merritt White and Garrett Reed White, of Houston, and her beloved dogs, IzzyKy and Cesar.

Our daily message to Marianne: “We are stronger and we are better because of you. More!” Bon, Savannah & Reese

Due to COVID 19 pandemic, a gathering of friends and family is not possible, but a celebration of Marianne’s life will be held at an appropriate time.

A special thank you to the staff at Texas Oncology, Cedar Park; your caring and kindness were truly appreciated.  A very special thank you to Lisa from Kindred Hospice for your guidance and assistance through those final hours.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society in Marianne’s memory.

Christopher Henry Torti

Christopher Henry Torti, of Liberty Hill, made his transition on July 12, 2020.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Hank Torti and Gloria DePasquale, his sons, CJ Torti and Dominic Torti, and brother-in-law Joseph Taliuaga.

He is survived by his wife, Leah, and step-daughter, Sofia Miller, mother-in-law Danna Hooper; sister-in-law Heather Drake; daughter Priscilla Torti and her husband Cruz Lopez, granddaughter Maegan Wilson and her wife, Katie Wilson; grandson Tristan Lopez, daughter-in-law Amanda Torti; daughter-in-law Christina Torti and granddaughter Katherine; grandson Aidan Hughes; sister Cathy Torti, sister Geri Taliuaga and her partner Ray McClain; brother Bob Torti and his husband Chuck; brother Mike Torti and his wife Karen; step-brother John DePasquale and his wife Gab; step-sister Dianne Searight and her husband Tom; as well as many nieces and nephews. We would be remiss not to include his ACS “brothers” Mike Dany, Danny Ingram, and Steve Zamzow, and all of the other folks who he cherished and spent so much time with.

Born in Bayshore, NY on September 28, 1949, Chris “got to Texas as soon as he could”. Following graduation from Sul Ross University, Chris always planned on being a teacher and coach. Fate had different plans for him, though. He began his career with the American Cancer Society in 1973 as a Field Representative for 18 West Texas counties surrounding Midland/Odessa. Between 1973 and his retirement, he served as Executive Director for El Paso, Income Development Director for Dallas, Executive Director for Dallas, Division Vice President for Field Services (1984), Senior Vice President (1992), and Chief Operating Officer (1995), all for the former Texas Division. His professional accomplishments include winning the award for the best fundraiser in the Division (1975); first staff person to raise $100,000 in El Paso, TX (1978); staffing the first Gala event in Texas to raise over $100,000 (1979 Dallas CBB); he became the first staff person in Texas to complete a successful capital campaign (Dallas Office-1980); became the only Area/Metro manager in the history of the Division to win all ten staff achievement awards in the same year (1983); managed the first $3,000,000 Area in the Division (1983); staffed the first Hispanic Summit (1996) and African American Summit (1998) in the Texas Division; created Division Associate Vice President positions for Diversity (2000) and Learning and Development (2001); and created the Texas Division Relay For Life Business Unit (2002). He was named Chief of Staff with the merger of the Texas Division with the Heartland Division to form the High Plains Division in 2005. He retired on May 1, 2013, after almost 40 years of service.

Chris was described by his friends as “a complex but loving man”, both “gruff and tender”. He never met a stranger and would regale anyone who would listen with stories of his constant near brushes with death, keen powers of observation, and unmatchable wit. He was brought to tears by every sappy movie he ever saw, yet would let out a string of cuss words that would make a sailor blush if someone didn’t use their turn signal. When his step-daughter’s father was ill, he drove an hour and a half each week, to hang out and play checkers with him. Next to his family, the loves of his life were the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers (his cat’s name is Ranger), and riding his beloved motorcycle. He even wrote a book about it!

Chris died of congestive heart failure. He was peaceful and surrounded by family. Although his death was not anticipated by the medical staff, we believe that he made the decision to leave his body. He wouldn’t have wanted to live a diminished life and was, we are sure, happy to be reunited with his “boys”. A celebration of life will be held once travel and large groups are safe again.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor to the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association are appreciated.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Vaissman, who stepped into the huge shoes of Dr. Kalife and filled them well, the staff at Seton Ascension Round Rock, and his nurse, Heather.

Floyd J. Brake

Floyd J. Brake was born February 26, 1927, to Arthur Wade Brake and Bessie Mae Brake, shortly before the beginning of the Great Depression. One of 10 children, he stopped going to school in 6th grade to help support the family by working or hunting.

An adventurous spirit, he bought his first car, a non-running Model-T, for $10 when he was 13. After three days of tinkering, he got it running, and spent the day driving around DeQueen, Arkansas. His fun was quickly interrupted by a police officer at the service station, who spotted Floyd’s missing tags. Instead of pulling over to explain, Floyd stepped on the gas, drove it around a corner and into a cane field on the side of the road. He watched quietly as the police officer drove up and down the road a few times looking for him. A few days later, Floyd sold the car to his uncle.

On December 11, 1941, the U.S. entered World War II. Floyd, and his best friend, Dewey, immediately joined the Navy.

He was originally posted in the machine shop, near the top of the ship. Unfortunately, they noticed his mechanical inclination, and moved him to the engine room, at the very bottom, where it was hot, and cramped.

They served 15 months, 8 days sea duty on the USS Lexington (CV-16), where they battled in the South Pacific until the end of the war.

Returning to his hometown, he met Ann. The two were married in 1947. Together they had three children, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, with one more expected in September.

Floyd was a car nut through and through. He used that same trick from his first car many times — the buying, fixing and selling part — eventually opening his own used car dealership.

Aside from his love of cars, he enjoyed playing pool and fishing with his grandkids.

He was buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill next to Ann on August 21, 2020, in a private graveside service.
