10004185_1481144388767464_1932417161_aMarshall VanZandt Whiteley was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Monday, August 11 in Leander, TX.

Born January 17, 1997 in Tulare, CA, Marshall moved with his mother, Brandee and brother, Wyatt, to Sweet Home, OR when he was 2 and started school there close to most of his maternal family until the age of 6 when they moved to Las Vegas, NV and met Donovan VanZandt who would become Marshall’s father. In 2006 the family moved to the Round Rock/Liberty Hill area. Marshall would have been a senior at Liberty Hill High School and had planned to follow his great grandfather, grandfather, two uncles, and cousin into the military upon graduation.

Marshall loved sharing his family with his friends and his friends with his family through frequent trips to area lakes and weekly pizza and movie nights. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh as well and enthusiastically shared his humor with everyone he came in contact with. As awkward as he sometimes appeared, Marshall was comfortable in his own skin. He had the unique ability to sense another’s pain or fear and open his huge loving heart to them.

Marshall is survived by his mother, Brandee Day-VanZandt; father Donovan VanZandt; and brother, Wyatt VanZandt of Liberty Hill; grandparents Bob & Jan Day, OR; Sylvia Cunningham and Joe & Susan VanZandt, TX; birthfather, Eric Whiteley, and grandparents Ed & Yvonne Whiteley, CA; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.

A celebration of his rich but too-short life will be held on Saturday, August 16 at 7pm at Margarita’s in Liberty Hill.

Christopher Keith Churchill

image001Christopher Keith Churchill, known to the world as Kit (or Kittles) passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2014.

He was born in Austin, Texas on February 29, 1980. He graduated from Liberty Hill High School and The University of Texas. He is the beloved son of Keith Churchill and Deborah McGehee West, and brother to Spencer Churchill and Becky West, and grandson to his surviving grandmother Mary McGehee.

Kit lived every day of his life with the wonder of a child and the wisdom of the ancients. Fittingly, although Kit was technically 34, he would argue that, as a leap year baby, he was really only 8½. Either way, he left us much too soon.

He was kind, gentle and passionate about life. He read voraciously, spoke eloquently, thought deeply, and wrote beautifully. He was always up for an adventure and traveled frequently, whether around the state, the country, or the world. He argued forcefully but respectfully and was equally gracious, win or lose. He gave freely of himself, asking nothing in return. He was a loving and devoted son and brother. He was, quite literally, a modern renaissance man; technically savvy, intellectually adventurous, and artistically gifted. He was quite simply the best.

On Saturday, October 11th at 11:00 a.m. his family and many friends (his extended family) will come together at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church to visit with each other, and with Kit one last time, followed by a service as he is laid to rest.

Pall bearers include Spencer Churchill, his cousin Tres Churchill, old friends Brent Calvin and Kevin Searcy, and new friends Derek Trainer and Khai Ma. In addition, Russell Churchill and Van Calvin will serve as honorary pall bearers.

James ‘Jim’ Lee Burns

Burns, JamesJames “Jim” Lee Burns passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, October 8th, at his home in Liberty Hill at the age of 44 after a hard fought battle with cancer.

James was born on July 21, 1970 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and moved to Leander, Texas in 1980.

He graduated from Leander High School in 1989 and shorty after started working for Young & Pratt mechanical contractors where he worked for 25 years. James truly loved working for Young & Pratt and took pride in all his work. James had a passion for classic cars and trucks and spent a lot of his free time working on his cars/trucks, going to car shows and rebuilding them.

James was diagnosed with cancer on December 23, 2013. He battled the cancer bravely and with ferocious determination. On September 3, 2014, James was told that the cancer had taken over, he still continued to fight with the same strength and determination to the end. He was a true winner.

James’s greatest joy in life was his wife and daughter. He met the love of his life in 1989 and stole her heart. In 1997, their daughter “joy of their life” was born. James worked hard to provide for his family and he was a hero to both of them.

James was truly proud of his daughter, Brianna. He taught her to set high goals for herself. He took much pride in her accomplishments both as a scholar and as an athlete.

Though James’ life was cut short, he left to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory a loving family and a host of friends.

James is survived by his wife, Shannon Burns, his daughter, Brianna Burns, his mother Diana McDaniel, his father Darrel McDaniel, his brother, Darrell Fortier and many aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces and nephews.

The family received friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2014 with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Leander Chapel, 1200 S. Bagdad Road. Interment followed at Hopewell Cemetery in Liberty Hill. Obituary and guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com.

Charles Canady

IMG_0705-grayCharles Canady may have lost the battle against cancer but, he won the war on October 16, 2014 at 8:22 pm. He passed away in his room on his bed surrounded by his wife, children and friends. He was brought back home to his beloved Liberty Hill Thursday and passed with dignity surrounded by love and knowing he had made it home.

He had fought his battles against renal cell carcinoma since May 29, 2012 and surprised the doctors so many times by overcoming so many of the challenges this cancer threw at him. He just wanted to stay with his family. He tried so hard to stay with us, but now there is no more pain, no more tumors, no more radiation, no more hospitals, no more tubes, no more struggles and no more disappointments. One of his last triumphs was to be here to meet his first granddaughter Hadlee Rae and he met that goal with so much pride.

Charles met his wife Kathy in 1992, a widow with two small children. They met through his father Joe Ed Canady, and after an evening of sheep shearing he asked her out for a date. She couldn’t think of a place to go and so their first official date was at Burger King. Their second date was a movie and dinner at a Chinese restaurant. The fortune cookie told him he was going to make an important decision in the near future. They were married five months later on November 21, 1992. Charles accepted his readymade family and loved them as any proud parent would. He formally adopted Kristin and Brandon in 1995. It was only a formality to him, but it gave him peace of mind that they would always be his kids.

Two more children, Blair and Paige, were born to Charles and Kathy and he would often tease them when they would bicker with each other that he loved them all but he chose the first two and faith sent him the next two. Family was established for Charles by love not by birth.

Charles was a very generous man. He believed in helping people when they needed it and he believed in public service — both he did to the best of his ability. Often he would send a customer off with a pay me later or when you can or a pay me for the next repair not this one. He was a true mechanic working in the business long before he graduated from high school. He owned and began restoring his first car at the age of 13. He often could fix something before replacing it. He knew how cars and parts worked and he knew money was often hard to come by for some. He was always willing to tell someone how to fix something when they asked or tell them what was wrong. He didn’t charge for estimates or advice.

Public service was very important to him and after Liberty Hill’s incorporation he served on the first city council — a role he fulfilled for 13 years. They were difficult years with lots of conflict and heartache as is unfortunately what often happens during the formative years in the life of a city. He and his family endured these hardships because he believed they were for a greater goal. He spearheaded and worked on many projects that a city needs when it first starts. He always believed, however, that it was a “WE” project and never needed it to be an “I” did it. Charles’ dream was that one day Liberty Hill would evolve from a bedroom community to a place that could offer jobs to future generations and permit them to stay in Liberty Hill to work and live.

The most important accomplishment, however, to Charles was his family. And for that he endured the pain of living with illnesses. Cancer was not his first brush with a major illness. He was electrocuted by two 220 leads to the back of his head in October 2005. Surviving this devastating accident was a miracle in itself. He fought his way back and although he was never pain free or overcame all the damage of this accident, he still managed to continue his dreams and make new goals to meet. Cancer reared its ugly head in 2012 and he faced the challenge of his life. He met it head on and fought it fiercely. He fought it for his family and for his dreams for the future. He fought it for the things he planned on doing for them and with them in the future.

Charles was a very giving and forgiving man. He could endure the heartaches sent his way and accepted the shortcomings of those that hurt him always with the hope that things would change. He was a loving man that was never afraid to share his love with family and friends. He never met a stranger. He never wanted to shut a door that couldn’t be reopened. Charles was an artist, stain glass builder, musician playing many instruments proud to have been first chair in the trumpet after his sister Lisa graduated from Liberty Hill High School. He was the very best yeast roll maker, furniture restorer, wood worker, home renovator in our needy house, and the very best husband and father we could ask for or deserve.

He was a man of humor and humility. Charles was a dreamer, a planner and a doer. He was still making plans for the future until Wednesday. He always thought he could beat this disease and this helped him to far out-survive its grasp. His heart never played out, only his body could be defeated. He was a man of faith and knew there would be a tomorrow even after he had to leave this earthly world. He is at peace in a better place with a body that can take him wherever he wants to go.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Joe Ed Canady, Sr. and his aunt and uncle, Robert and Marie Brooks.

Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 22 years, Kathy Canady; his four children, Kristin Davis and her husband Jason, Brandon Taylor Canady and his wife Jessica, Blair Nicole Canady, and Rebecca Paige Canady; his mother, Nina Faye Canady; his brother, Joe Ed Canady, Jr. and his wife Jeanie; his sister, Lisa Laminack and her husband Randy; his favorite sister-in-law, Laurie Nix; grandchildren, Walker Davis and Hadlee Rae Davis; nieces, Lindsey Laminack and Katie Canady; nephew, Kyle Nix; great nephew, Colton Fisher; along with a host of friends.

Honoring Charles as pallbearers were Kyle Nix, Ben Cousins, Jason Davis, Frank “Doc” Stiles, Marshall Walters and Ricky Gavin. Honorary Pallbearers were Lanny Stone, Gary Spivey, Liz Rundzieher, Kerry Russell, James Hanley, Glen Gavin, Janet Whitehead, Clyde Krause, Milton Pogue, Mildred Hicks, Randy Williams and Billy Ray Guerin.

The viewing was held at 10 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the Liberty Hill Church of Christ, 1700 Loop 332. Interment followed at the Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Cancer has taken all our reserves financially and in lieu of flowers we would like to ask that you make a donation to help with funeral expenses at Union State Bank in Liberty Hill.

happy GraceGrace Daly Runyan passed away quietly, in her home, on October 25, 2014. She was born on August 8, 1925 in Presidio Texas, the third of five children for Fernando and Lupe Daly.

Growing up, Grace was an athlete who especially enjoyed tennis and roller skating. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, majoring in Home Economics. At the end of her freshman year, she returned to Presidio to work for the US Customs Service. In 1950, Titus Charles Runyan came to Presidio to work on the construction of the Camino Real highway and he met Grace at a soda fountain. He proposed to her several months later at a dance in Valentine, Texas on Valentine’s Day. They were married in Marfa, Texas on September 12, 1950.

In 1986, they purchased land located in an area halfway between Liberty Hill and Bertram and they moved a house from Bertram to the land.

Grace was known for her quick wit and her dry sense of expressing it. She worked hard with Titus to build a good home on their land in northwestern Williamson County and we are grateful that she was able to pass on to her place in her Heaven from her home on earth.

Grace was mother to Patricia Anne, Rosanne, Kathleen, Grace Elizabeth and Stephen Titus. She was also a grandmother to fourteen and great-grandmother to six, an accomplishment she cherished. Mother loved trees, and if you would like to do so, the family requests that you plant a tree in her honor in the coming year.
